Children in a classroom

Each year we witness with hope new Grade One children, joining as with others before them, the 12-year journey to attaining a matric qualification. One of these pupils is Sinethemba, whose mother embraces the eternal African hope that this child will achieve and even surpass what she and her deceased husband could not achieve – a post-matric qualification that will enable her to become self-sufficient through formal or self-employment. Despite the bleak prospect of almost 50 percent of Grade Ones dropping out of school along the journey, her faith in the future of her child is not diminished.
